Media, women and the reproduction of symbolic violence

Diploma thesis analyses the reproduction of symbolic violence in selected Czech media. Namely, the newspapers Blesk, MF Dnes, Lidové noviny, Právo, Aha!, Hospodářské noviny and the internet servers blesk.cz, idnes.cz, lidovky.cz, novinky.cz, ahaonline.cz, hn.cz. In the first part, the thesis analyses the key theoretical background, concepts and ideas that support the analytical part of the thesis. The main aim of the thesis is to offer a comprehensive typology of symbolic violence in the Czech media environment. That is, whether, and in what ways, the mass media perpetuate gender inequalities and unequally distribute power in society through language. Given the complexity of the concept of symbolic violence, the thesis uses a combination of content and discursive analysis. The findings present a comprehensive overview of the occurrence of symbolic violence in the selected media.

Motherhood as a competence for primary school teaching

The diploma thesis is focusing on phenomenon of change of career paths of university-educated but non-pedagogically educated women who return to the work process after maternity / parental leave. However, these women, who before motherhood were engaged in various jobs, in which they also achieved considerable job success and fulfilled their professional dreams, do not return to their original jobs. They are newly choosing the position of primary school teachers. Motherhood, as a loss of original professional competencies and gaining of new competencies, is thus a key aspect of research in connection with primary school teaching. The goal of this thesis is to uncover, in the form of in-depth interviews conducted from a feminist perspective, the reasons and motives for changing the employment of individual communication partners, to what extent it is a truly free choice of these women, and how the family, state or public discourse participates in this change. Komparační studie čtyř romských životních příběhů

The objective of this thesis is to do a comparative analysis of four Romany life-stories in prose from different parts of the world and identify features which may justly be called characteristic of Romany writing. The comparison of Victor Vishnevsky's Memories of a Gypsy, Mikey Walsh's Gypsy Boy and Gypsy Boy on the Run, Andrej Giňa's Paťiv. Ještě víme, co je úcta and Irena Eliášová's Naše osada yields valuable insights into how Romany writers construct their identity and to what extent their current work relates to the existing literary genres. Because of Romany studies' multidisciplinary nature, the extensive introduction lays the theoretical foundations for the analysis. I proceed from the characteristics of Romany studies in general in part 1.2 to the way it was practised during my undergraduate years in Prague as opposed to the Western tradition (part 1.3). Using a case study of the schism Romany studies are currently facing in the Czech Republic, in part 1.4 I attempt to illustrate the more general epistemological challenges the field has been grappling with between essentialist/primordialist and radical constructivist views. Stranger compliment as a form of symbolic violence on women in Czech Republic

This thesis introduces sociolinguistic phenomenon called street compliment, that has not been studied much in Czech Republic. It is a form of a comment given in public places by unacquainted persons, most commonly by men to women but not exclusively. Based in the feminist tradition the research was realized as a set of semi-structured interviews with eight female participants. The research revealed how the participants understand the phenomenon and how the heteronormative configuration of society is being perpetuated. The interpretation of street compliment as a form of a compliment is based on the discourse of female atractiveness and a strong sexual drive at males. The street compliment can be used to express sexual interest, to perform masculinity or to perform identity overall. The street compliment as a display of masculine behaviour towards a legitimate target, that is to say attractive woman, refers to the use of street compliment as a mean of disciplination of female subjects. The participants agreed that they do not utter street compliments because of its convenience. Instead they would express their interest in a group of friends without exteriorizing it.
